Basic Information
Name: ControlD
Category: DNS
Type: Anycast (Company based in Canada)
URL: https://controld.com/
Description
ControlD is a fully customizable DNS service that allows you to not only block annoyances like malware, tracking, ads or IoT telemetry, but also unblock over 180 services through a network of proxies in over 100 cities.
Although to get access to a full feature set you need a paying plan, we have completely free community resolvers (no accounts required) that block various types of content including malware (domain level, and IP level found in DNS answers), ads and trackers, social networks and a completely unfiltered DNS resolver: https://controld.com/#free-dns
Why I am making the suggestion
This is a Windscribe project, so naturally these resolvers abide by our paranoid level privacy policy. Own hardware with an anycast network, no query logging.
Our ad + tracking block list is based on top of 27 different lists (~1M domains), with our own block lists added on top, and most importantly false positives removed based on 3 years of community feedback from millions of Windscribe users. Our custom whitelist has thousands of domains that are falsely blocked by most community lists.
The malware blocklist not only blocks malicious domains from several sources, it also checks if the resolved domains resolve to "bad IPs" from various real time threat intelligence feeds. This makes the list a LOT more effective, and is a feature that Pi-Hole devs refused to do.
My connection with the software
I am affiliated with the company and is the lead on this project.
