Description

I feel like there should be some recommendations for virtual keyboards on Android (maybe iOS, too, but I've never used one and I don't know if this can be achieved and if it's necessary since they have better privacy practices), the huge amount of devices, brands, OSs and so on that this sphere occupies is enormous and if you add to this the different versions of software of their keyboards for all these variations you simply can't know what they are doing or not, if they are collecting data or not, if they are sharing it or not, and this is a pretty important kind of data since it is everything you write.

As a first good recommendation I say FlorisBoard is the best option I've found that's libre, still in development an with loads of features implemented or to be implemented. They have really good aesthetics which is something that in my opinion other software in the same realm lacks, and switching from your regular OS keyboard to this is almost seamless, or if anything, you just need to get used to using some extra features that your regular keyboard doesn't support.

I wonder if there should be some sort of criteria?

Adding Hacker's Keyboard to the suggestions.

I really like that project but it is a bit outdated and I don't know if it should be recommended since it is something for power users, I'm not saying it should be a no, simply that I don't know if that's the kind of software to recommend. We should wait and see what people from the team thinks about it.

I really like OpenBoard , a fairly updated open source keyboard. You can also get it from F-Droid

I vouch for this keyboard as well:
https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.dimension.tessercube/

Make's it real easy to use PGP when along with the keyboard.

My suggession for Criteria :-) :

  1. Has support for most major language(language with more than 100 million speakers)
  2. Is in stable state.
  3. Auto-correction(might as well a physical keyboard otherwise :p )
  4. Is a keyboard!

In my opinion, most of these points aren't fulfilled by the current suggestions.(open board, simple board comes closest)

florisboard works really well, still in beta but has promising features on their roadmap.

OpenBoard is the most stable, full featured FOSS Android keyboard. But FlorisBoard is an interesting younger project.
