Basic Information

Name: KeexyBox
Category: Parental Control
URL: https://keexybox.org

Description

KeexyBox is mainly a parental control software that provides privacy. That means : Internet access times, force safesearch for Google, Bing and Youtube, Website filtering using DNS, Internet Browsing over Tor network, forward of DNS queries to Tor Network.
It is an open source software (GPLv3) and it works on a Raspberry PI to plug on your internet router.
It constitutes a cut-off point between the devices of your home network (computers, tablets, smartphones, etc.) and your Internet access. It acts as a default gateway and DNS server for your devices.

More technical description: https://wiki.keexybox.org/doku.php/network_topologies

Why I am making the suggestion

Generally parental control software do not mix with privacy because the website filtering is directly done on the client device (may track your internet history on the device) or by a service online which we often do not have access to verify or delete our internet history.
KeexyBox can be a good compromise because parental control is done between the devices used by the child and your internet router.

My connection with the software

I am the author.

  • I will keep the issue up-to-date if something I have said changes or I remember a connection with the software.

Interesting, looks pretty good so far, i can see why privacy aware parents would use something like this, but im wondering where it could fit into the site though, maybe on https://www.privacytools.io/operating-systems/#firmware ?

Another question, What is the planned business model for this project, @bsaglietto ? Do you plan to add any paid features or maybe rely on donations?

I plan to a create a PRO edition with builtin Blacklist, LDAP and technical support. Also sell hardwares that include KeexyBox to make it more accessible to people.

I see, that seems realistic. il be poking around more in the coming days to see if i can find anything why this should not be listed, but so far, its looking good.

force safesearch for Google, Bing and Youtube,

Do you download the safe-search filters to some database within the whole application every or was this actually saying google has access to timestamps and exact URL's of blacklisted sites potentially visited.

Perhaps google safe search has been something privacy friendly all along if so please correct me.

Safesearch is forced by using DNS to point www.google.??? to a specific Google IP that will always filter the result by removing for example adult contents (links to websites or pictures). Using Google safeseach has no more impact on privacy than searching without this feature.
The filtering job is done online by google algorithms. You can get more information at: https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/186669?hl=en
This feature was implemented by google for school so that students can do secure search on the Internet. Be careful, this feature does not filter the sites themselves but only hides the Google search result. If a student knows an adult site URL, he can go to the site directly. This is why blacklist of domains to import into keexybox must be used in addition.

It is the same behavior for youtube and Bing.
For bing, it is explained at this address: http://help.bing.microsoft.com/#apex/bing/en-us/10003/0

I wouldn't personally use such a service, I get the other side of it.
It's just spyware imho.
Perhaps someone will create

Yes and searching google has some privacy implications.. As you are probably aware of.
Bing (MS) is also a tracking company. As you are probably also aware of.

Think of IP linkage account linkage, (google accounts) fingerprint identified browsers, among logins also youtube considering..
The safe-search integrated with this gives google yet another data-point.

Almost every kid (and loads of adults) LOGIN to google while doing YouTube , google forms , with google having a high chance of their basic search engine as well.
Essentially the system would be giving a company which makes it money by selling very targeted ads even more info.

I absolutely respect all you have put into this. I just don't see this mixing with privacy or privacytools.io for that matter.

Other people might think differently. This is just an opinion.

Would there be a way you think to create the same feature set you have now without implementing essentially google 'oversight'? >>

I share your opinion. Just know that KeexyBox can be used just as much by those who care about their privacy as those who don't. The safesearch option is there just for those who agree to use Google's services with their terms and conditions but want to filter the results for parental control. For those who want to use Keexybox to improve their privacy, they are free to simply blacklist Google, Bing and use DuckDuckGo (safe.duckduckgo.com). They can also activate on KeexyBox, browsing and anonymization of DNS queries via the Tor Network.
