Basic Information
Name: Simple DNSCrypt
Category: DNS, under the section "Encrypted DNS clients for desktop"
URL: https://simplednscrypt.org/
Description
Open-source GUI installer and manager for DNSCrypt and DoH on Windows.
Why I am making the suggestion
I have been looking for various ways to avoid DNS hijacking to connect to sci-hub (I am still amazed at how unethical this hijacking by ISPs is, and how easily they comply). I have tested DoH solutions such as Firefox's, but DNSCrypt seems a more robust and easy way for the moment for this purpose.
I have been using Simple DNSCrypt for a few months now with great success, it only needs to be setup at the first runtime (simply click to enable dns encryption for the device used to connect to internet), and then it can be forgotten, dns encryption always work, even through vpn (including corporate/institutional vpns I have to use at work) and also behind corporate firewalls. I also could easily guide non-technical people to encrypt their connection by installing this software.
So I think it is highly effective and very simple to use for non-technical people. It's also very stable and doesn't slow down the connection. I highly recommend it.
The only downside is that it only runs on Windows. There are other similar softwares for Linux and MacOSX such as YourFriendlyDNS but I didn't try them. If someone can test one of them, I would also strongly support adding such a cross-platform software (ie, a 1-click GUI to both install and manage DNSCrypt) alongside Simple DNSCrypt (only for Windows).
My connection with the software
No connection, I am a simple user.
