I am the author of Dnote

Dnote is a simple, free and open source note-taking software that supports end-to-end encrypted backup. It works a CLI, web client, browser extension, IDE plugin in order to minimize switching environment and keep the users focused. It is also self hostable with a single binary.

Criteria

  • Easy to use. Could your mother use that tool or service? Usability is most important.

Works as a web client, and the browser extension. Non technical users have been building personal knowledge base using those. Also works in a terminal for technical users.

  • Cross-platform / Accessible.

CLI supports Linux, macOS, Windows. The web application is WAI-ARIA compliant and cross-browser. The browser extension supports Firefox and Chrome.

  • Privacy respecting.
  • Backup is end-to-end encrypted and data is stored encrypted at rest when backed up.
  • Free and open source
  • The web application has no tracking.
  • The website uses https://github.com/usefathom/fathom
  • Open Source / free software is preferred but not required.

It is a free and open source software under GPLv3 and AGPLv3.

  • Must list source code in source_code.md (if applicable)

  • Prioritize Products without Vendor Lock-in (decentralized/self-hostable) or data interoperability.

All data is stored local-first in SQLite3 which is considered a recommended storage format for preservation of digital content.
